Create is an interactive application displayed on a large multi-touch computer. If the viewer puts her hand on the screen, an animation—made with colored pixels—will appear suddenly all around the fingers and palm. Once the hand is removed, the stencil keeps sparkling for twenty four hours before disappearing to leave a blank screen. A handprint can be erased at any time by tapping a button accessible on the lower right, which resets the screen making it possible to create a new animated stencil. Inspired by early cave paintings, Philippe Safire created a digital version that invites the audience to collaborate in generating a unique artwork. In Create, Safire explores the ephemeral quality of the digital medium as well as the tension between creation and destruction.
