Shades

2015

The art installation Shades depicts Safire’s taste for illusion and the virtual. Using pink and gold material, the artist fashions a pair of sunglasses with a pixelated contour. The artist borrows this object from pop culture, long associated with glamour and fame. Safire’s 15-minute animation—projected onto the sculpture—was developed in reaction to Warhol’s infamous statement: “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” In cyclical repetition, the animated sequence includes brilliant pixels and words: money, power, influence, sex… The piece references the Society of Spectacle now “digitized.”
