Ideas continues Philippe Safire’s reductive way of making art. Crafted from translucent material, the sculptures are replicas of computer software’s file icon, an image consecrated by the Digital Age. An animation is projected onto the flat surface of each sculpture. The elements of design, the building blocks of visual art, scroll repeatedly. Thin golden lines serve as “pedestals” for the geometric shapes in motion: squares, circles, triangles, rectangles. Ideas documents the inspiration phase, when an artist projects his or her first thoughts onto a blank canvas. As the title indicates, the work remains partly visual, partly conceptual.
